Bone Graft Surgery

Postby Spices @AOL.Com » Thu Jun 11, 1998 8:59 pm

How I wish I had access to this site 7 years ago. My son is
now 7. He had lip surgery at 10 wks. and palate at 7 mo. We are
now facing bone grafting. Went to surgeon yesterday and he said
we may need braces to straighten teeth first. I would like any
info on this surgery. recovery time etc. He is very active and
doesn't want to miss out on much pool time. We have been very
lucky, no tubes in ears and no speech needed. Slight scar and
slightly crooked nose but no ever notices with casual contact. If
anyone has any info on this please share. Thanks

Hello, I have a daughter who is 10 years old with a bilateral
cleft lip and palate which was really wide. We have had great
success with her sugeries. She had her bone graft done when she
was 8 years old. If you would like to know some of the details of
this surgery, feel free to e-mail me privately at
ngile@yahoo.com.

Hi, my name is Lynneand I have a 9 year old son who has a
cleft lip/palate. reading your letter was like reading a chapter
from our lives. My son sounds very similar to yours. He just had
the bone graft surgery last August, and has recovered quite well.
The hardest part for him was the pain from the donor site, and
the restricted diet for a short time afterward. Michael, our son,
does wear braces, but that does not bother him at all. He had
speech therapy for about 3 months when he was around 3-4 yrs. As
you said, the cleft is hardly noticeable - I notice it most if he
gets upset and cries. The area seems to swell a little and turn
red. Sorry to go on and on, but the stories just sounded so
similar. I hope you will write if possible - I have been looking
for someone to correspond with on this subject. Sincerely, Lynne

My son is 7 years old and will be needing the bone grafting
surgery soon. I haven't any information on the subject either so
if you hear anything, I would love to hear from you.

Did your child have his bone graft yet? We are facing this
this summer (my 7 year old daughter). Would love to hear how this
went for you. Thanks.

No, We still have not had surgery. Had a palate expander and
now have a retainer to straighten front tooth. I decided to quit
worrying about it until Doc's tell me it is time. Let me know how
yours goes.
