Hidden Cleft Palate or Sub-mucous

Postby Valerie » Wed Jun 03, 1998 7:25 am

Hello. I have younger sister, 19 monthes old and she has been
diagnosed with sub-mucous palate or a hidden cleft palate. She
has always spit up through her nose (not as much as she use to,
but every now and then she will) and had many ear infections. She
was born without a uvula, well she has the notch but not the skin
flap that hangs down. The doctor wants to wait to see how her
speech develops before he wants to think about sugery to make the
skin flap that hangs down. She is speaking some but not much. She
can say mama, dada, aaa (This is for Ashley-her sister who is 7),
vava (for Valerie-me), and meow - we just got a new kitten. We
are concerned about her speech and need to know what to do next.
We know that we will need to put her in speech therapy, but we
think she is too young now (maybe not-suggestions). So what can
we do until then to help her with her speech. We would appreciate
any information and suggestions. Please E-mail me at
EponineV@aol.com Thank you, Valerie

I too was born with a cleft palate and as an adult now, I
still have a speech impairment. I have had extensive speech
therapy, classes, etc. It should have been corrected at birth but
was not. I am trying to find out some information on the
procedures of this surgery, and this being a disability if there
is any help expense wise for surgery?

Yours truly,

Amy

I brought my daughter to get evaluated for speech therapy.
They seem to think that she has a hidden cleft palate or
sub_mucous. She is 4 years old. How did the doctors determine
this in your sister as a baby? We had no signs except that she
cannot say her sh, ch, g, or j's without adding an n in there as
in shnoes for shoes or schneeze for cheese.

Tomorrow I bring her to see the ear, nose and throat
specialist. What should I expect?

My daughter was born with laryngomalacia (no voice) and also had the problem where the formulas would come out her nose while eatting. Even when she would spit up it would come out her nose.
She developed a voice at the age of two and it was noticed that she was not saying words. We then found out that there was fluid in the ears and she needed tubes. She has since had two sets of tubes and is in need of a third. She also has speech difficulties and now that she is in Senior Kindergarten, she is having great difficulty comprehending. Does anyone know whether or not fluid in the ears go along with having this hidden cleft palate? A friend of mine mentioned to me about this hidden cleft palate and I was wondering how it was diagnosed and if there is a procedure which could correct it?

I have a submucous cleft hard palate, but I always had a voice. Sometimes fluids in the ears can result from a submucous cleft palate so check with your doctor. I never had this problem since my "cleft" was always closed. Jeff Alterman at alterman@bestweb.net
