Can a cleft palate be seen in an ultrasound

Postby Kari » Tue Feb 24, 1998 12:20 pm

My first born son was born with a cleft palate, and today (I'm
19 weeks) we had an ultra sound done to see if there was a cleft
palate and the tech who did the ultrasound said it would be
difficult to tell yet, but I've heard other wise. Can some one
give me some input on this?

You might have your ob/gyn doctor refer you to another
radiology clinic that has better sonogram technology. Or you may
contact prenatal care experts at a Children's Hospital.

During the 2nd trimester of my first child, my ultrasound
tech was concerned about a possible cranial problem. So I was
sent to a regional radiology clinic whose ultrasound was
spectacular compared to my ob/gyn clinic's ultrasound. Luckily,
there wasn't any problem. I hope this information is helpful to
you.

Good Luck, LAB

You can most definatly see a cleft lip at 19 weeks. This is
the age of our son when it was first discovered that he had a
cleft lip. The better the equipment the better it will show up.
At 22 weeks they could see that the palet was also affected. Its
pretty incredible what they can see with that equipment. They can
also be wrong too. But I think more right than wrong.
