I have a beautiful 2 year old daughter who was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. I am pregnant again and wondering what the odds are that this one will have a cleft.

Thanks, Carrie:)

I have a 13 month old son and he was born with a cleft lip and palate. I just had another boy and he did not have one. It was not genetic in my situation. If it's not genetic my Dr. told me that it's like a 6% chance of it happening again.

I was born with a cleft. My son was born with a cleft. I just lost a baby at 21 weeks pregnant and he did not have a cleft.

To reduce the risk, please consider taking folic acid.

Good articles, Linda!

I have a 15yo son who was born with ULCP/PRS.
It was not until 2007 and four kids later that my wife and I discovered the research about folic acid potentially negating cleft. None of my other children were born with cleft.
Apparently, according to the study, 0.4mg of folic acid daily is enough.
I am not convinced that this is the "silver bullet" solution against the possibility of a cleft, but the results of the studies seem to strongly support the theory.
We found this information on the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (http://www.niehs.nih.gov); I believe there is also a link on one of your article links.

Regards,
Gregory

Your concern is very real, but let me tell you of my own experience and it might relax your mind. I am a 65 year old woman who was born with a cleft lip and no palate. None of my other siblings (2 after me) were born with it. I am married and have 2 grown children (girls) they were not born with it. I have 4 grandchildren and none were born with it. I too worried, with each pregnancies of my own and my girls, and also for my two brothers when they started to have children. None of them had children that were born with a cleft lip or palate. May this rest your mind somewhat.
