Hypotonia & Cleft Palate?

Postby michellebeau » Thu Jul 10, 2008 3:50 pm

I was wondering if hypotonia (low muscle tone) is common with a cleft palate condition? My babygirl had her soft palate repaired at 10 mths. Could there possibly be an underlying problem? She is 14 mths old now and is in physical therapy for hypotonia. I don't know if I'm being over concerned but I think I'm going to ask the pediatrician for a referral to a neurologist? Does anyone have babies that experience physical developmental delays/hypotonia?

She also has speech delays...which I understand is due to the cleft palate. She is seeing a speech therapist bi-weekly.

Avery is in PT also to build his muscles but we were told it was because of having the feeding tube in his belly and not getting to put in as much 'tummy-time' as he should have earlier. He has very weak arms and upper body.....

I will ask Doc about it.....perhaps there is some neurological connection.
