I'm just wondering what most people do when it comes to their teeth with clefts and when they start treatment. My 15 month old is getting her baby teeth in and the spot where she has a cleft in her gum she hasn't gotten a tooth and in the bottom it seems like on tooth is coming in on a major angle.

My son, Eyson, has no teeth in the cleft in his gum, either. He certainly isn't having a shortage anywhere else, though. His PS isn't going to do anything with his gum until he starts getting permanent teeth. So he'll probably be around 8-years-old before he gets his bone grafting done and gets fitted for partials. He has seen a dental specialist already and he seems to be pretty satisfied with his development as well. We were told not to be surprised if his teeth were crooked or spaced. It's a pretty normal thing with babies that have a cleft all the way through to the gum. Ask your cleft team dentist if you're too worried about it, though. It never hurts to ask.

We are having a similar issue with Avery's teeth. His bottom teeth look pretty good, although one is twisted a little, they are upright. The top ones, however are coming in pointing toward the back of his throat. We called the surgeon just for a heads-up kind of thing since we have palate surgery coming up and he says this is pretty typical.

Now we are cutting our first year molars! What a joy! lol

Since his palate surgery Avery has begun to grit his teeth in the front. Not sure if the repair just made the top ones more readily available so that they touch the bottom ones or what but MAN do I hate that noise! It is like fingernails on a chalkboard!

I never had teeth where my cleft was to my knowledge until I was older and get my permanent teeth. Everyone is different. I don't think you need to worry about it unless the doctors are worried.
