Pregnant again...

We found out 3 weeks ago that we are pregnant again. We are 8 weeks along. I am scared to death that this baby will have a cleft too. Do you guys know how common this is to happen again? It is not genetic in our family and I am on a folic acid pill as well as prenatal. With Jacob we had no idea that he was going to have a cleft, the Dr. said sometimes you can't see defects on ultrasounds.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! It's great news. My doctor said that if I was to have another baby, the chance of having a baby with cleft issues would be something like 5 -7 or 8% (I can't recall the number but I know that it was less than 10%). Take care of yourself and get some sleep! You're going to be busy with two little ones! Congrats again, Sandy

I just read your question. My first child was born with Pierre Robin Syndrome (recessed lower jaw and cleft palate) in 1997. His story is on this website if you would like to read it (Theodoros). I now have 4 children and none of my other children were born with PRS or a cleft of any kind. Genetic counseling may help alleviate your fears or could make it worse. We were in a children's hospital and provided with every service available when our first child was born. Good luck to you and please let me know if you have any further questions.

As far as ultrasounds are concerned--they can not detect a cleft palate. I had many ultrasounds (detailed, with specialists) with my all my children since the first one had PRS and I also had a cleft palate only as a baby. I wish you a happy, healthy pregnancy and a beautiful, healthy baby.

Thank you so much for your advise. We have talked to a geneticist, and it is not a genetic thing in my family or my husbands. They are not sure what caused my sons cleft lip and palate. My OB said she would send us to a specialist to get an ultrasound when I'm farther along to see if the baby has one also. I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't. Thanks again.
