Sippy cup after soft palate repair

Postby jsd » Sun Mar 25, 2007 10:24 pm

My 10 month old was born with a cleft of his soft palate (and many other craniofacial issues). His palate was repaired almost 4 months ago. He is now able to drink out of a regular Dr. Brown bottle with a regular nipple. But I am having trouble getting him to learn to drink out of a sippy cup.

Is there anyone who's child had a cleft of the soft palate only? If so, do you have any information about which sippy cup would be the best for me to try with him? I have read about the Mag Mag but it is very expensive and I wasn't sure if I needed to buy it.

Thank you in advance,
Jessica

Dear Jessica,

Hello. My name is Georgette Couvall (Dr. Salyer's patient: http://www.worldcf.org). Welcome to the group. How are you? Here is my Personal Story link:

Jessica, we have just started with a sippy cup too, and I am using the Nuby ones with the soft spout. They seem to be working pretty well. At first I cut the hole a little bigger to make it easier for him, but now he can do it on his own! I also tried the Avent starter cup, and he could get juice out of it too, but seemed to do better with the Nuby. Hope that helped a little!

Jessica,
My GD is 5 months old and weaned herself from a Mead Johnson bottle after her lip surgery last month.

She started out on a Avent sippy cup but settled on the Gerber Soft Spout without the valve.

I've figured out that I have a bunch of sippy cups in my cabinet simply for her to decide which one she liked. But if she ever changes her mind I'm ready for her! LOL!

My suggestion is to keep trying until you find the one he likes. Good luck!

Thanks for the help! Rick can now drink out of the disposable sippy cups made by The First Years. The only probably is that the top just snaps on. So when it's dropped on the floor the top can come off. And I'm afraid the top might come off in my diaper bag. I think I will keep trying other cups.

Georgette, sorry I didn't respond until now. I read your story. I have heard a lot about Dr. Salyer. Rick goes to Medical City Dallas, too. But he sees Dr. Fearon. We live in Louisiana, by the way. I was wondering if there is any way to access the videos of the tv show that you have been on. On-line, maybe?

Thanks,
Jessica

Dear Jessica,

Hi. How are you? I did look to see if there was any online videos that show the programs that I'm on, but I don't think there are any.

However, Dr. Salyer (Founder & Chairman of the World Craniofacial Foundation: http://www.worldcf.org) was on Good Morning America (Friday, March 30th). I posted the link on the Smiles (http://www.cleft.org) website entitled, "Twins on Good Morning America."

If you can't find the link, please email me at georgettecouvall@hotmail.com and I'll email it to you personally.

Sincerely,

Georgette Couvall
