Cleft Lip & Palate Repair

Postby Kelly S. » Thu Dec 11, 1997 6:31 am

I have a young daughter (6 1/2 months) who was born with a
bilateral cleft lip and palate. She had her lip repair done at 7
weeks and will have her palate surgery between 9 and 12 months.

In reading some of these message and also the families
stories it seems to me that surgery in other areas is done much
earlier (soon after birth for both the lip and palate). Is my
understanding of this correct? We live in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Hi Kelly, I am a 31 year old female with a bi-lateral cleft
lip and palate. I know there have been many advances in the
surgeries since I have begun this long journey. However, I would
like to recommend that you speak with a prominent surgeon that
has done amazing work for me as well as the infants and children
that come to him. He is the head of the Cleft Palate Center of
New York University (NYC)and his name is Dr. Court Cutting.
Perhaps he can help some. My surgeries when I was an infant were
done in MANY stages (closing one side of the lip, another surgery
for the other side, etc.), so it took pretty darn long. The
surgeon who worked on my as a child up to adulthood is Dr. Milton
Tuerk in Patchogue, New York. Sorry I don't have the phone
numbers on hand. I can get them for you if you need. Also, a
great book to get is "The Cleft Palate Story" by Samuel
Berkowitz. Hope this helps some.

Yes, repairs are done much earlier now. Here in Norfolk, VA,
Dr. Bill Magee performed my daugher, Marina's surgery at 36
hours. This was to repair both her cleft lip and palate. Dr.
Magee is one of the founders of Operation Smile. You can reach
them through our web site. You can also contact the Craniofacial
Center here at 757-668-7031.

Good luck to you!!

Hi. I would be happy to discuss palate surgery with you. I
have a son that is now 3 and he had the surgery later also. Alot
of factors play into the dicesion of when to do this surgery. I
am new to this web-site and would love to talk to any parents
that want advice or want to offer me advice. E-mail me at
Kazy308@aol.com.

I really enjoyed your message. Thanks for sharing. My daughter
was bornwith a bilateral cleft lip and palate. It has been
repaired but we have more surgeries ahead of us. We live in
Texas. I would really like to read that book. Who is the author?

I am a 38 year old woman with both cleft palate and lip. I
have been doing much research lately since it was recomended that
I have the fistulae that have opened further over the years
closed up. Anyway, it seems as though they are doing the surgery
at many different ages. My first procedure was done when I was 2
weeks old and the palate was closed at 18 months. It's amazing
what can be done these days and you are fortunate to have had
your child born in the 90's since so many advances have been made
in this field! I am a beautiful, normal, highly intelligent woman
who has been bettered by the experiences I've had!

My son just had his lip repaired at 11 weeks by Jeffery Marsh
in St. Louis, Mo. I believe after many hours of research, that we
chose the absolute best plastic surgeon. Many doctors do these
procedures at different times... I've even heard of a doctor up
North that will do both the lip and the palate at once. I don't
believe that would be the way to do it. You need to talk to
someone you feel comfortable with and has a tracking of all
his/her patients from their first surgery until age 18.

My son was born with a bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate. His lip repair was at 6 weeks and his palate at 16 months. We have an oral plastic team here in Nebraska that has a team of doctors on it that deal with children born with this defect. Check with your hospital or state to see if they have a similar program. After Ben was born, his doctor got in touch with a plastic surgeon who came to see us right away to answer any questions. I wish we has the internet 15 years ago. I could of has help right at my fingertips. E-mail me with any questions. In 15 years I have been threw many surgeries, dental and ear troubles and speech therapy. I will help any way that I can.
