Postby Trecia Coble » Sat Jan 16, 1999 8:52 pm

My son was operated on (lip and Palate) at 14 days old, He
never wore arm restraints, We were told If it hurts to be touched
they wont touch it. It worked for us!! Just something to think
about. Good luck all.

I WAS TOLD THAT WE WOULD NEED ARM RESTRAINTS ON OUR DAUGHTER
FOR A TOUCH UP ON HER LIP. BUT I HAVE BEEN READING THAT IT IS NOT
NECESSARY. WHICH IS TRUE.

hello, when my daughter had her first surgery i was also told
she wouldnt need arm restraints. to my suprise when i walked into
the recovery room there she was with huge plaster casts on both
arms. i was in shock and dr. told me that he decided to do it
because her teething causes her to put her hands in her mouth
alot and he didnt want the stitches harmed. i would like to know
more of other parents experience with arm restraints and what
they think of them

My daughter had her lip surgery at 5 days. We were told she
would have to wear restraints until the stitches were removed.
After the surgery, sure enough, there were the restraints.
Imagine our relief when the staff in the nursery removed the
restraints the next day. She didn't need them!! She came home
from the hospital 5 days later, without the restraints. When a
baby is so young, all that is needed is to keep the fingernails
trimmed to prevent snagging one of the stitches. I don't know
about the palate surgery, though. We are due for that in about 6
weeks. Wish us luck!!!

When my daughter, now 2-1/2, had her first surgery when she
was just shy of 4 months, she was in arm restraints after the
surgery. Elizabeth could loosen one arm, sling it off onto the
floor, and untie the other one. The nurse didn't believe me at
first until that night, while I was asleep, she came in and
retied her restraints no less than 5 times! Needless to say,
Elizabeth became known to her nurses as "Houdini".
