Hello, that's a great question. While cleft palate can occur
as an isolated condition, it can also occur as part of a number
of genetic syndromes. A genetic syndrome occurs when a change in
a gene causes a number of secondary conditions. A medical
geneticist can help determine if there is a particular syndrome
and this information can be important to medical management of
the other conditions as well as the cleft. Also, if a condition
does have a strong genetic component then there may be the
possibility of recurrence for other family members. At CHKD
Medical Genetics is part of the Craniofacial Clinic. I hope this
helps address your question. Given the large number of syndromes
that can include clefting, it is not possible to provide details
without having seen the patient.
