Cleft Lip and Palate

Postby Christine Miller » Sun Sep 13, 1998 3:20 pm

My husband and I are considering adopting a 2 1/2 year old
little girl from China. She has been diagnoses as having a cleft
lip and palate. We live in Staten Island, New York and would like
to know if anyone could tell me the steps I would take as far as
what doctors we would contact in our or surrounding areas. I have
read about bone grafts taking place and am not sure exactly at
what age this would take place. I am sorry if this is not posted
to the correct place, but I am new to the internet and have just
found this site.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks you.

I am 27 years old and was born with a cleft lip and palate. I
would rcommed you goig to NYU Medical Ceter and see Dr. Cutting
(plastic surgeon) and Dr. Grayson (dentist) they work together in
correcting the cleft lip. They are not only good doctors they are
great people and are very caring and compasionate to the family
and the patient.

First-Best wishes to you, your husband and family. I was born
with a bi-lateral cleft lip and palate, and was treated as a
child, young adult by one surgeon on Long Island and now by a
terrific surgeon in NYC. If you need additional information, you
may contact me at amgula@sprynet.com Good luck to you!

congrats on your new child! There are so many options for
cleft lip/palate now. You should probably have a cleft team in
your area, consisting of plastic surgeon, dentist, speech
therapist, etc. Everyone who would have contact with your child
would be included in this team. we found out about this team
through a plastic surgeon in our area. If you have a children's
hospital nearby, they could probably point you in the right
direction. Good luck to you, and congrats again. If you are
looking for more sites on clefts, go to "web find" on
the internet, and enter craniofacial for the keyword. It will
open up a whole new world to you. Best wishes! Lynne
