My daughter had the scope done at three years old. The child has to be awake for this. They put a scope with a tiny camera down the child's nose into the back of the throat where the soft palate is and then the child has to talk with this device down their throat. They have to repeat certain sentences etc. Then they play back the video tape to see how efficiently the soft palate is closing off during speech. Luckily my daughter did not have a problem with this and spoke when it was asked of her, but it could be difficult for some children. I can't remember the name of the procedure because she had it ten years ago. I could actually see her soft palate closing the back of her throat and I found that very reassuring.
