Having children

Hi!
I am 24 years old, I was born with unilateral cleft lip and
palate. There is a history of cleft lip and palate in my
family, my praternal granmother, father, brother and sister
all of various forms.
What are the chances of me having my children born with this??
My praternal grandmother had 5 children and my father was the only one born
with CL & P.
Also, on my moms side of the family there is history of CL & P, does this make
the risks higher for me??
Please, if anyone can help me that would be great.

I have a son with a unilateral cleft lip and palate, he is 3 months old and is having his lip repair tomorrow.


In the handout for the genetist, it states:


A child who has a cleft has a 2 % - 5 % chance of having offspring with a cleft; however, if the child with a cleft also has a close relative with a cleft, then this risk increases to a 10 - 12 % chance of having offspring with a cleft. Finally, the unaffected siblings of a child with a cleft have approx. a 1% chance of having a baby with a cleft; however, the risk rises to 5 - 6 % is there is more than one individual in the family with a cleft.
