new technique

Postby sandlos@golden.net » Mon Aug 16, 1999 5:39 pm

My 6 yr old son has had the Ilizarov procedure on his mandible
5 times. I believe this is a form of distraction osteogenesis.
His last was in July of this year. His jaw is partially
fractured, "screws" inserted above and below each
fracture line. We turn the screws a bit each day, resulting in
the growth of new bone in the gaps. Does this sound familiar?
It's done at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. My son
has Pierre Robin with an extremely small mandible which showed no
catchup growth. We've had great results from the distraction. We
can talk here or e-mail me at home Debra

Ilizarov technique is called so for the Russian Dr. Ilizarov who invented it to repair broken bones. He worked in a small hospital in Kazakhstan Republic which soon became very famous. By this technique he also could, for example, to make legs of equal length for the patients with birth or post-traumatic problems. My school friend's child with inborn bone and joint disorder was successfully treated by Ilizarov technique. As I can see from your posting, this technique was developed even further.
