Social Implications of facial disfigurement

I'm conducting a research project on the social implications
of having a facial disfigurement - either one which you were born
with or one which followed an accident. I would be interested to
find out how such a disfigurement has effected your life
socially. Do you find that the general public tend to stare at
you and/or stand less close to you than they may to other
non-disfigured people?
