My wife had one until she was 26 years old due to a simular situation. After a failed closure attempt which left a large hole in the back and a smaller on in the front of her palate. The reason her parents didn't try again is as with this surgery and the two previous ones her heart had stoped and she had to be brought back. So they quit. They were very satisfied with the lip results and felt the obturator would be someting she could live with. She overcame speach problems very well.
