Looking for a surgeon in the South Florida area

Postby Susan (shansen60@aol.com) » Wed Jun 26, 2002 6:51 pm

My teenage son has become very self-concious about his cleft lip. He needs another surgery and I am having difficulty locating a doctor (in the Miami or surrounding area) who specializes in this procedure. I am willing to travel outside the state if need be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to contact Calvero (a.k.a. Kim) at the Cleft Club website. Her E-mail is calvero@bigfoot.com, calvero@cleftclub.com & calvero@tampabay.rr.com. Since she was born cleft herself and lives in Florida she might be able to help you find a suitable surgeon to take care of your son's cleft lip. Jeff Alterman at alterman@bestweb.net

Although I already emailed Susan back, I thought I'd share some information for anyone else who lives in Florida.

The Florida Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association site at http://floridacleft.org lists cleft teams throughout the state. Just click on the "Teams in Flroida" link on their site. They also have a toll free number that you can call for information at 1-800-726-2029.

I wanted to mention to you that I'm cleft myself. I was born with a submucous cleft hard palate and a submucous cleft lip (right hand side of the upper lip) where the skin is intact, but the muscles aren't. When I hold my lips closed the right side of my upper lip has the tendency to open a little. Also when I raise my upper lip the right side rises first. This is only a minor problem. There are some other issues connected with my cleft. One of them is the occasional pain that I have from my submucous cleft hard palate. Again this is a relatively minor problem. None of the other issues are serious. If you want me to explain to you a little more about my cleft you can E-mail me and then I can tell you more. Jeff Alterman at alterman@bestweb.net

It has been months since i have been on so i just read this. i also had my son's surgery done with dr. frank stieg in orlando. We had it done when he was 2 days. if you could see him now at 2 1/2 years of age you wouldn't even know. i think he did a great job. you could also make a vacation out of it. Go a couple of days before and go to the parks.
