Explaining cleft lip + palate for biology

Hi!
I have to do a biology project on cleft lip and palate. Because the teacher think is it depresing to work on genitic problems, he wants us to do a research and then take an egg and pretend it is a baby with a genetic problem. I picked cleft lip, but I do not really know what to do. He wants us to be creative, so I am going to do a video, from the birth to a couple of weeks. But I do not really know how this genetic problem actually works and what are the real problems and consequences. So if someone can give me informations, I would be very pleased. Thank you
