Cost of cleft lip/palate?

Postby Richard A. Spritz, M.D. » Tue Dec 11, 2001 2:40 pm

To all:

I am giving a major talk this Thursday (12/13) on the genetics of cleft lip/palate, and one topic I have been asked to touch on is the cost of CL/P. Can any of you give me rough estimates of the total lifetime financial cost of addressing non-syndromic cleft lip/palate, including special pediatric care and support, surgery, genetic counseling, speech therapy, etc.? I would be very grateful.

Thank you,

Richard A. Spritz, M.D.

Pardon the late reply; hopefully you have the info you need.

I have read that the overall cost averages $100k over a lifetime. I can find the sources of the info if you need. Let me know.

Trisha,

Thank you. That number was also given to me by a representative from the CP Foundation. It comes from the National Institutes of Health.

Trish,

Thanks. Yes, I had that information from the CP Foundation. It comes from the NIH.
