Problem with teeth

Postby k.cochran@tees.ac.uk » Tue Nov 20, 2001 5:46 am

Hi, I wonder if anybody can help? My niece is six year old and she was born with bilateral cleft lip and palate. She hasn't any teeth along her top gum and we have just been told by an orthodontist that she will not be getting any at all. The orthodontist also says that as her cleft is so wide, it is unlikely that they will be able to even fit a bridge for some teeth when she is older.

I wonder if anybody has any experience with this problem, and if so, what did you do about it? Also, we live in the UK - if anybody knows of an orthodontist secialising in cleft lip and palate cases, it would be great to hear from you either via e-mail or this discussion forum.

Thanks

Im 34 and suffer from a doube cleft lip since birth. My palet was not affected however my front upper teeth grew in all squint and was too bad to be straightened by a brace so at the age of ten I had to get 6 teeth extracted ,gums stitched and a plate in at the Glasgow Dental Hospital. At the age of ten it was a pretty dramatic thing to go threw. That was 24 years ago so I guess the technology has advanced alot since then.It was discussed as a teenager that I could have had screw in teeth made but that would mean more pain and surgery which I decided against.

Why don't you just go to any dentist and try to find out the main factor.Or i suggest you to ask your niece to drink milk because it can help her.So good luck from me!!!
