dental problems due to cleft

Postby terrid226@hotmail.com » Wed May 17, 2000 6:21 pm

Hi. My son, born with a cleft lip and palate, is now 15 months old. He has had both his lip and palate repaired with some minor surgeries in the future for these. I am wondering about dental problems his cleft team has advised us may occur. We have insurance that has covered the cleft repairs, but does anyone know how insurance companies handle the dental? The company I work for does not provide dental insurance & I have checked into getting it on my own. What I found was that they do not cover dental problems resulting from birth defects. Are there any laws governing/ requiring insurance companies to cover these costs? If anyone knows anything about this or where I should look for more info, please email me. Thanks & God Bless!

I would suggest you visit this site and to call your state's Insurance Commissioner and found out the laws pertaining to clefts. The laws vary from state to state.
