First congratulations on the birth of your son. Palate repair
time frames vary from doctor to doctor and also to the type,
width, and severity of the cleft.

If there is a cleft of the lip it is often repaired first
using the code of 10. 10 lbs 10weeks and 10 grams (blood count)

Cleft palates seem to repair 6-9 month range although I am
sure some have been closed before and some have been closed
after. Again it all depends on the circumstances. Some palates
are repaired in one surgery some are repaired in two surgeries.

Basically the first issue will be feeding. Once that has been
figured out you can advance. You should be contacted by a
craniofacial anomolies panel. This panel will see your child and
evaluate his needs. At this panel there will be a hearing
evaluation, pediatrician, ENT, social worker, Plastic surgeon,
etc. etc. They will examine him and give you information as to
time tables. This list is a very good source of information and
there is another site www.widesmiles.org which also provides a
lot of info. They have an email discussion list too!.

Best of luck

Congratulations on your bundle! My daughter, Jamie, was born
with a unilateral cleft lip/palate on 10/03/98. The first few
months can be very demanding, even for veteran parents. Feel free
to contact me via e-mail at cullymor@bitstorm.net I will try to
answer all the questions I can.

Hi my name is bobbie and my little boy was born with a cleft lip and palate and he goes for his palate surgery tomorrow .
He was born feb.1999 he had his first surgery on his lip when he was three months old he had to be ten lbs we had a hard time getting to gain weight he had to be on a 2 ounce bottle it looked like a baby doll bottle it helped to keep him from getting as much air we also had to give him gas drops.
Then he at 6 months he got fitted for his obtrater it fit's in the roof of his mouth
to block the open space of the palate.
Then at 9 months he had his bone graph on his gum were thy take a piece off of his spare rib and do the graph.
Now were at the third surgery and I'm not real sure about how this one go??
He always done good after each surgery he was eating about two hours after each surgery.
I hope this helped a little bit
feel free to e-mail me and ask me any questions
